Long before it became a familiar sound in Chinese television dramas and contemporary film scores, it was already being played in royal courts, scholar&#8217;s studies, and village ensembles across China for more than two thousand years.<\/p>\n\n        <p>This article traces the historical journey of the Guzheng &mdash; from its earliest written mention in <em>The Records of the Grand Historian<\/em>, through the dynastic periods that quietly reshaped it, to the 21-string instrument played around the world today. It draws on Ms Jin Loh&#8217;s own studies of the instrument with Chinese music conservatory professors and associate professors holding doctoral degrees in Guzheng performance.<\/p>\n\n        <h2>The Earliest Written Record &mdash; The <em>Shiji<\/em><\/h2>\n\n        <p>The Guzheng&#8217;s documented history reaches back more than <strong>two thousand years<\/strong>. One of its earliest surviving written references appears in the <em>Records of the Grand Historian<\/em> &mdash; the <strong><em>Shiji<\/em><\/strong> (<span lang=\"zh\">\u53f2\u8bb0<\/span>) &mdash; a foundational work of Chinese historiography compiled by the Han Dynasty historian Sima Qian around <strong>100 BC<\/strong>. The instrument we now know is the result of two millennia of patient evolution.<\/p>\n\n        <h2>Historical Names &mdash; Han Zheng &amp; Qin Zheng<\/h2>\n\n        <p>The Guzheng has been known by several names through history, each of which reflects the cultural soil it grew from. It has been historically referred to as the <strong>Han Zheng<\/strong> (<span lang=\"zh\">\u6c49\u7b5d<\/span>) and the <strong>Qin Zheng<\/strong> (<span lang=\"zh\">\u79e6\u7b5d<\/span>) &mdash; names that locate the instrument firmly within the Han Chinese musical tradition and its early geographical roots.<\/p>\n\n        <p>Today, the prefix <em>&#8220;gu&#8221;<\/em> (<span lang=\"zh\">\u53e4<\/span>) &mdash; meaning &#8220;ancient&#8221; &mdash; is added to distinguish the instrument from its more contemporary descendants and to honour the depth of its heritage. The full name &mdash; Gu Zheng (<span lang=\"zh\">\u53e4\u7b5d<\/span>) &mdash; literally translates as <em>&#8220;ancient zither.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n        <h2>Through the Dynasties &mdash; The Tang Era and Beyond<\/h2>\n\n        <p>As the centuries unfolded, the zheng evolved both in its physical form and in its musical role. By the <strong>Tang Dynasty<\/strong> (around the 7th century AD) &mdash; one of the great cultural high-points of Chinese civilisation &mdash; the zheng had become widely embedded in both <strong>court music<\/strong> and <strong>folk music<\/strong>. It was no longer the simple bamboo instrument of antiquity; more strings had been added, and its expressive range had grown considerably.<\/p>\n\n        <p>Through the Tang and the dynasties that followed, the zheng gradually expanded into the <strong>twelve-string<\/strong> form, and later still into the <strong>thirteen-string<\/strong> form. Each addition allowed the instrument to express a richer range of melody, ornamentation, and emotional colour &mdash; suiting the increasingly refined musical tastes of the eras that played it.<\/p>\n\n        <div class=\"pull-quote\">\n            <p>&#8220;To trace the strings of the Guzheng is, in a sense, to trace the long quiet conversation between Chinese music and the centuries that shaped it.&#8221;<\/p>\n        <\/div>\n\n        <h2>The 13-String Zheng &mdash; A Standard Form Emerges<\/h2>\n\n        <p>By the early <strong>20th century<\/strong>, the <strong>13-string zheng<\/strong> had become widely recognised as a standard form of the instrument. Throughout this long period &mdash; and indeed long before &mdash; the zheng was used in a remarkable variety of musical settings.<\/p>\n\n        <p>It appeared as a <strong>solo instrument<\/strong>, where its full expressive voice could be heard most clearly. It was equally at home as part of <strong>traditional Chinese ensembles<\/strong>, weaving its lines into the larger fabric of Chinese instrumental music. And in some traditional performance practices, the zheng was used as a <strong>self-accompaniment for singing<\/strong> &mdash; the singer played the strings while accompanying their own voice. These diverse historical uses are recorded across centuries of Chinese literature, and they reflect the rich artistic life the instrument has led across very different eras.<\/p>\n\n        <h2>The Modern 21-String Guzheng<\/h2>\n\n        <p>Although the Guzheng is rooted in deep history, it is also very much a <strong>living modern instrument<\/strong>. Today, the most widely-played standard form is the <strong>21-string Guzheng<\/strong>. The expansion from 13 to 21 strings, completed in the twentieth century, dramatically widened the instrument&#8217;s expressive range &mdash; allowing for richer harmonic textures, broader melodic reach, and more sophisticated repertoire.<\/p>\n\n        <p>The modern Guzheng is typically tuned to a <strong>pentatonic system<\/strong> (a five-note scale within each octave), and the 21 strings span approximately <strong>four octaves<\/strong>. This generous range &mdash; combined with the left-hand techniques of pitch bending, vibrato, and ornamentation &mdash; has kept the Guzheng remarkably relevant in both traditional Chinese music and the contemporary musical worlds of pop, drama soundtracks, and film scoring.<\/p>\n\n        <div class=\"insight-box\">\n            <p><strong>Why the 21-string design?<\/strong> The expansion to 21 strings was a quiet but transformative decision. It allowed the Guzheng to perform repertoire that earlier forms simply could not accommodate &mdash; not by replacing the older traditions, but by extending what the instrument could express. Today&#8217;s player still plays the same five-note scale within each octave, but with four full octaves of range, the harmonic and melodic vocabulary opens beautifully.<\/p>\n        <\/div>\n\n        <h2>Regional Performance Traditions<\/h2>\n\n        <p>One of the quiet beauties of Guzheng music is that it does not speak with a single voice.
