across both ABRSM (UK) and Trinity College London.
Under Ms Jin Loh’s tutelage, Hway Yin earned a Distinction in every singing examination she sat, from beginner level all the way up to Grade 8 — and her record holds across both leading international examination boards: ABRSM (UK) and Trinity College London.
Beyond Distinctions and High Distinctions, she was recognised as a High Scorer in every examination she sat — her marks among the highest in the country, across both boards. With Ms Jin Loh’s encouragement she even skipped several grades, and still the Distinctions came faithfully. Her journey from beginner to Grade 8 was completed in about five years — an examination record rare to find anywhere in the world.
95 / 100 — Among the Highest in the Country
Among the many grades in Hway Yin’s singing journey, one Trinity College London mark sheet stands apart.
In one of her Trinity College London Singing examinations, Hway Yin was awarded 95 out of 100 marks — one of the highest marks in the entire country for that grade that year. The official mark sheet records, in the examiner’s own hand, the breakdown across every examination criterion.
She was not the only High Scorer from Ms Jin Loh’s studio. In one year of Trinity College London singing examinations, the two highest marks at that grade were tied — 95 out of 100 — and both belonged to Ms Jin Loh’s students, Hway Yin and Jane Kong, who were each awarded High Scorer. The second-highest mark went to another of her students, Celine See. When a single student earns High Scorer recognition, it might be credited to talent; when the highest and second-highest marks at a grade all belong to students of the same teacher, the explanation points elsewhere — to the teaching itself.
Distinction Through a Sore Throat
One of Hway Yin’s Distinctions carries a story worth telling. On the morning of a Trinity College London singing exam, she woke to every singer’s worst fear — a badly strained voice after weeks of intense practice. She went in anyway, with Ms Jin Loh at the piano beside her, and still earned her Distinction. In her own words: “It hurts. It’s uncomfortable. But giving up is not an option.” The full account is told on Behind the Results.
