There is a particular quiet ache shared by many professional adults — the doctor who once loved to sing as a teenager, the lawyer who studied piano as a child and then set it aside, the country manager who has always wished to learn singing but believed the demands of a serious career left no room for it. The years pass; music stays in the background of life as a longing, not a discipline. And the question gently surfaces, again and again: is it still possible?

This article is for those readers — the busy, accomplished professionals whose hours are largely claimed by their careers, and who quietly wonder whether a real musical life remains within reach. The honest answer, drawn from twenty-seven years of teaching professional adults across continents, is this: not only is it possible — the demanding professional life often produces some of the most remarkable musical achievements Ms Jin Loh has had the privilege of guiding.

The Professionals Ms Jin Loh Quietly Teaches

Across the years, Ms Jin Loh’s adult students have included PhD holders based in the United States and Switzerland, a specialist medical doctor in Thailand, medical doctors in Australia and Malaysia, businessmen and businesswomen running their own enterprises in Malaysia, a Country Manager leading her company in Malaysia, and a lawyer practising in New Zealand.

They are, by any measure, profoundly busy people. And yet, alongside their demanding careers, each of them continues to pursue their passion and love for music — entirely online, under Ms Jin Loh’s tutelage. Their stories, gathered in the four sections below, provide a quiet but unambiguous answer: it is possible for the professional adult to pursue music seriously, even within the rhythms of a very busy career.

“It is never too late to pursue the love and passion of learning music. With the right teacher, the right method, and the disciplined hour quietly carved out of a busy week, the professional adult can reach a level of musicianship that surprises even themselves.”

I.   Dr Hathaikan — Specialist Medical Doctor, Thailand

The first example is Dr Hathaikan, a specialist medical doctor working in a hospital in Thailand. Pursuing her love for music and singing, she has studied with Ms Jin Loh entirely online via Zoom Pro for the past few years — her lesson hour kept faithfully alongside the very demanding rhythm of her clinical life.

In her early forties, for the first time in Dr Hathaikan’s life, she entered the international music competition circuit. The result, gathered across the year, has been remarkable.

Multiple International Gold Prizes & First Prizes — 2024

In her debut competition year alone, Dr Hathaikan was awarded the following recognitions in the Musical Theatre (Singing) category:

  • 2024  ·  World Master Open Music Competition — Winner
  • 2024  ·  World Exceptional Musicians Competition — Gold Prize (Singing)
  • 2024  ·  European Classical Music Vocalist Award — Winner
  • 2024  ·  Golden Prestige International Music Competition — First Prize
  • 2024  ·  Best Classical Musicians Awards — Winner

100% Full Marks in ABRSM (UK) Music Theory — Three of Four Grades

Alongside her singing achievements, Dr Hathaikan has sat all four ABRSM (UK) Music Theory grades under Ms Jin Loh’s tutelage. In three of the four grades — Grade 1, Grade 2, and Grade 4 — she scored a perfect 75 / 75 Full Marks. At Grade 3, she scored 73 / 75 High Distinction, falling short of a fourth perfect score by only two marks.

This is, in every quiet sense, a real-life example: a specialist medical doctor, working in a hospital, who began studying music from the basics as an adult — and reached this level of recognition in only a few years. It is never too late to pursue the love and passion of music.

II.   Dr Imran — Medical Doctor, Malaysia

The second example is Dr Imran, a medical doctor in Malaysia. He first met Ms Jin Loh as a child of twelve years old, when his family returned to Malaysia from the United Kingdom. He has now studied with Ms Jin Loh for thirteen consecutive years — from his earliest cello lessons as a young boy, through his entire medical school journey, into the demanding life of a practising doctor.

He began with the cello. A few years later, he added singing as a second instrument. Across those thirteen years, Dr Imran has completed his ABRSM (UK) Cello Grade 8, and in 2025 he completed his ABRSM (UK) Singing for Musical Theatre Grade 8 examination with a Distinction. Throughout the demanding years of medical study, and even through the entire MCO lockdown period, his weekly lessons continued faithfully. His love and passion for music has persevered.

Across thirteen years of weekly lessons, sustained alongside the unrelenting demands of medical study and now medical practice, Dr Imran presents a different kind of evidence to Dr Hathaikan’s: not the late-blooming professional adult who arrives at music as a beginner, but the young professional who began as a child and has carried the discipline of music faithfully into his adult life. Both stories share the same quiet truth — that a demanding career and a serious musical life need not be in opposition.

III.   Dr. Ng — PhD Holder, Cognitive Science Researcher (UCSD, USA)

The third example is Dr. Ng, a PhD holder and cognitive science researcher based at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), in the United States. Her professional life is structured around the demanding rhythm of post-doctoral research — experimental work, peer-reviewed publication, grant cycles, and the unforgiving attention required of any serious academic.

Despite a sixteen-hour time-zone difference with Ms Jin Loh’s studio — and despite a schedule that does not allow much room for anything beyond the laboratory — Dr. Ng has continued her love for Classical Opera Singing faithfully, week by week, through online lessons.

Her continued study is a quiet reminder that distance, in this considered modern era of well-established online music lessons, is no longer a meaningful obstacle. Carried by genuine love for the art — and accompanied by a teaching method refined across decades — the serious musical life remains entirely possible for the accomplished professional adult, regardless of where in the world her career has placed her.

IV.   Celine See — Country Manager, Malaysia

The fourth example is Celine See, a Country Manager in Malaysia, leading the whole of her company’s Malaysian operation. Her professional life requires frequent travel to European countries for business, and her working week is unmistakeably full.

She has studied music with Ms Jin Loh for approximately ten years. Celine has shared that her love for music began in childhood, but family finances at the time did not allow for formal music lessons. When she began her own working life, she decided to pursue the dream she had carried since youth — to learn singing, properly and seriously.

Celine did not approach music as casual leisure. She took up the considerable challenge of sitting Trinity College London Singing examinations, where she earned a Distinction and was awarded the High Scorer title — the recognition reserved for the highest-scoring candidates in the country at that examination grade. She was subsequently invited to perform live during the Trinity College London High Scorer Concert.

ABRSM (UK) Music Theory — High Distinctions in Two Consecutive Grades

Learning singing and music theory under Ms Jin Loh’s tutelage via online lessons, Celine also sat the ABRSM (UK) Music Theory examinations and scored 73 / 75 High Distinction in both her Grade 4 and Grade 5 theory examinations — almost full marks, in two consecutive grades.

International Competition Recognitions — 2024 & 2025

In 2024 and 2025, Celine was recognised across multiple international music competitions in the Musical / Opera and Musical Theatre categories.

2025

  • 2025  ·  Concours International de Musique Jean Philippe Rameau — First Prize (Musical / Opera)

WOMCO Iconic Magazine — Independent Third-Party Recognition

Celine has been formally featured in the WOMCO Iconic Magazine, an official publication of the World Online Music Competition Organizations that invites only multiple-award winners to be featured. The second page of her feature notes that she is a Country Manager in Malaysia; the third page records that, at the time of publication in 2025, she had studied music under Ms Jin Loh for approximately nine years — reaching her tenth year of continuous study in 2026. The magazine pages are reproduced below as independent, third-party evidence.

Celine See — “When I Look at You”

Below is a quiet practice recording of “When I Look at You”, captured at Ms Jin Loh’s music studio a few years ago — before the COVID years, when students still attended their weekly lessons in person. At that time, Celine was a young manager early in her professional career, well before her later appointment as Country Manager.

In this practice, after Ms Jin Loh had walked her through the world of the musical theatre character — what the character was feeling, why she was singing this song, the texture of her inner life — Celine entered that emotional space so deeply that she would later say she almost teared while singing. Throughout the recording, Ms Jin Loh accompanied her live on the piano, in the considered, unhurried way the studio has always practised.

A Quiet Conclusion — Music, Even Within the Busiest Lives

Four professional adults; four very different careers; one shared truth. A specialist medical doctor in Thailand. A medical doctor in Malaysia. A PhD-holding cognitive science researcher in California. A Country Manager in Malaysia. Across distance, time zones, and the most demanding of professional schedules, each of them continues to study music seriously — and to receive international recognition for the artistry that quietly grows alongside their careers.

With the technology now available, and with considered online music lessons delivered through Zoom Pro by an internationally award-winning music educator, these are real, living, documented examples of professional adults pursuing — and meaningfully achieving — their passion and love for music.

For any professional adult who has quietly wondered, year after year, whether music might still be possible: the answer given by these four students is the same, quietly given. Yes — and it is closer at hand than you might suppose.

The Author of This Article

This guide has been written by Ms Jin Loh, an international award-winning music educator with more than 40+ International Teacher Awards and 27 years of professional teaching. She is also an international music competition judge. Her professional-adult students — many of them doctors, PhD holders, country managers, lawyers, and businesspeople — have, between them, won the New York Music Awards Platinum Prize, multiple international Gold Prizes and First Prizes, and consistent Distinctions in ABRSM (UK) and Trinity College London examinations. Each one of them sustained their musical life alongside a demanding professional career.

Quite distinct from most music teachers, Ms Jin Loh is also one of the rare music educators to hold a qualification in Educational Psychology (UK), achieving 100% marks across all of her assignments in the discipline. With this working understanding of how students actually learn — not only what they need to learn — Ms Jin Loh observes the particular learning style of each professional adult student in her studio, and quietly shapes her teaching method to the way that individual best receives it. The technical material remains the same; the way it is paced, layered, and reinforced is adjusted to the student in front of her. This is one of the quietest reasons her students consistently excel in music examinations and international music competitions.

“Music is never the property of the young alone, nor of those whose lives leave abundant time. It belongs, quietly, to anyone who chooses to make space for it — considered hour by considered hour — with the right teacher beside them.”
