Classical Guzheng
Traditional Chinese classical repertoire forms the considered foundation of Ms Jin Loh’s Guzheng teaching — authentic playing techniques, foundational finger techniques (right hand plucking, left hand vibrato and slides), posture, and the refined artistry of classical Guzheng performance.
This is the path through which the Guzheng’s deepest cultural voice is gradually understood — technique by technique, phrase by phrase, lesson by lesson. The classical repertoire shapes the Guzheng player’s musical sensibility from the inside out, in the same way that classical training shapes any serious musician.
Pop & Drama Music
Beyond the classical repertoire, Ms Jin Loh also teaches popular modern songs, beloved Chinese drama music themes, and contemporary arrangements — a wonderful way to learn the Guzheng through music that students already love. Beyond her many years of formal Guzheng training, Ms Jin Loh is also a professionally trained Western Classical and Jazz musician. This rare combination — a serious training in both Western and Chinese musical traditions — allows her to teach the Guzheng with a depth and clarity that very few teachers anywhere can offer.
For students who already have a Western music background — perhaps years of piano, violin, guitar, or other Western instruments — and who now wish to take up the Guzheng (a Chinese instrument), Ms Jin Loh is uniquely placed to bridge the two worlds. She can clearly explain the similarities and the differences between Western and Chinese music theory, notation, ornaments, and interpretation — connecting what the student already knows to the new musical language they are learning.
This matters because Ms Jin Loh once walked the same path herself. In her early Guzheng studies, she found certain transitions confusing and frustrating — particularly when the same musical ornament symbols she knew from Western music turned out to be played, voiced, or interpreted quite differently in Chinese Guzheng repertoire. She remembers the quiet moments of looking at a Guzheng score, recognising a familiar symbol, and realising it did not behave the way her Western training had taught her.
Most Guzheng teachers — even highly skilled ones, including some with doctorate degrees or professorships — have studied only the Guzheng (or other Chinese instruments). They are not professionally trained in Western music. As a result, they may not be able to explain why a particular Chinese ornament differs from its Western counterpart, or how a Western-trained student should mentally re-map their existing knowledge when reading Chinese number notation.
A simple example illustrates the point. The note D4 on the piano (the D just above Middle C in Western notation) is, on the Guzheng, written simply as the number “1” in Chinese number notation. If the student then sees a small dot placed above that “1” — that is one octave higher (D5 on the piano). Once Ms Jin Loh explains this single connection to a new student who already plays piano, the entire Chinese number notation system suddenly makes sense — months of confusion can be resolved in a single lesson.
There is one further consideration that matters greatly for international students. Ms Jin Loh teaches her Guzheng lessons fluently in English. Because the Guzheng is a Chinese instrument, the majority of Guzheng teachers worldwide conduct their lessons primarily in Chinese — which can present a real barrier for students from English-speaking backgrounds, or for students whose entire musical vocabulary was built up in English. With Ms Jin Loh, the technical terms, the musical concepts, the historical and cultural context, and the careful word-by-word corrections that each lesson requires can all be conveyed clearly and warmly in English.

A Considered Path — from First Note to Performance
Beginner Guzheng Lessons
Beginner students are introduced to the fundamental skills required to play the Guzheng comfortably and correctly.
Lessons focus on building a strong technical foundation, including:
- Correct sitting posture and hand position
- How to wear Guzheng finger picks (plectra) properly
- Understanding the names and tuning of the Guzheng strings
- Reading Guzheng music notation using the traditional Chinese numbered notation system (简谱)

Intermediate Guzheng Lessons

Guzheng Lessons Suitable for Complete Beginners
Because lessons are conducted online, each Guzheng student kindly needs to have their own Guzheng ready at home before lessons begin. Unlike most Guzheng schools, Ms Jin Loh does not sell Guzhengs to her students — students source their own instrument from a Guzheng shop or online retailer of their choice.
When a Guzheng arrives by parcel shipment from an online shop, the bridges are placed separately inside the box, and the strings are not pre-tuned. This is by design — if the bridges were left standing on the strings during shipping, they could scratch the wood, and the strings could snap.
Please do not worry. As part of your early lessons, Ms Jin Loh will gently teach you how to position the 21 bridges correctly on the brand-new strings, how to tune each string to its proper pitch, and how to care for your Guzheng day to day. These small but essential skills are an important part of becoming a Guzheng player — and Ms Jin Loh is happy to guide you through them with patience and care.
