Two Quiet Philosophies Guiding Every Lesson
Ms Jin Loh’s teaching is quietly shaped by two guiding philosophies — one drawn from the patient art of Sourdough bread, the other from the considered ritual of Japanese Omakase dining. Together, they describe how Ms Jin Loh teaches: slowly, with depth, and never to a fixed menu.
Slow Nourishment, Long-Term Mentorship
“My teaching is like sourdough. It cannot be hurried, it cannot be shortcut, and its depth of nourishment only reveals itself with time.”
Sourdough bread is made slowly — with patience, with care, and with a natural starter that must be nurtured over time. The dough rests, ferments, and develops its character. There are no shortcuts. But the bread that emerges is genuinely nourishing, gentle on the body, and quietly sustaining for the long term.
Compare this to a sugar doughnut — cheap, prepared in hours, commercially available everywhere. At first glance, it is attractive. It is fast. The sugar offers a brief, pleasurable lift. But everyone knows, in the quiet of their own knowing, that this is not food that nourishes a body well over the years.
Music training works in exactly the same way. Some students arrive hoping to learn to sing or play in a very short time — the sugar doughnut approach to music. Taught this way, technique is never properly built, the muscles never given time to develop, and the body often pays the price: pulled muscles, a sore throat for singers, repetitive-strain injuries for instrumentalists. Ms Jin Loh’s teaching is the sourdough — slow, considered, deeply nourishing, and built to last a lifetime.

In the Japanese tradition of Omakase, the chef does not follow a rigid menu. They observe what is finest for the guest in that moment — and shape the experience around it. Ms Jin Loh teaches in the same considered spirit. There is no standardised syllabus imposed on every student, and no rigid week-by-week plan.
For example: suppose a singing student arrives one week and shares that her throat is unwell, or that she slept late the night before. It would not be wise to push her through a demanding high-note training on that day. Imagine a fixed college syllabus that insists — by week 8, the teacher must teach a particular challenging high-note song. Is it truly sensible to push that song into a student whose voice is not at its best, simply because the calendar says so?
Ms Jin Loh believes the student’s condition is the most important consideration in any given lesson. If a student is unwell, the lesson gently shifts — perhaps to score reading, musical interpretation, listening, or repertoire study — and the demanding technical work waits for a day when the body is genuinely ready. That is what the Omakase approach truly means: seeing what serves the student best, on this particular day.

All lessons are live, real-time sessions via Zoom Pro — not pre-recorded courses. Ms Jin Loh meets you face-to-face online, listens, demonstrates, and guides you interactively, just as in a traditional in-person lesson. You need only a free Zoom account and a stable internet connection.
One-on-One Private Mentorship
Each lesson is a private session between Ms Jin Loh and one student. She observes carefully how each student learns, listens, and responds — and adjusts her teaching accordingly to support their growth.
Confidentiality of Lessons
Students are kindly asked not to record any of Ms Jin Loh’s lessons — during or after the session — nor to share or post lesson content elsewhere. From time to time, Ms Jin Loh herself may briefly record a student’s playing during a lesson, so they may listen back and observe how they sounded — a small but valuable teaching tool.
Live Online — Not Pre-Recorded
Ms Jin Loh’s online lessons are fully live and interactive — you meet her in real time, just as you would in person. There are no pre-recorded videos to watch on your own. Every session is a private, one-on-one lesson where you speak, play, and receive immediate feedback from Ms Jin Loh directly. ABRSM (UK) Exams
Ms Jin Loh has extensive experience preparing students for ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music) examinations — the internationally recognised UK music examination board, widely regarded across the world as one of the most respected standards in classical music education. Her students sit ABRSM examinations across multiple instruments and grade levels, consistently achieving Distinctions, High Distinctions, and Full Marks.
ABRSM (UK) Success Stories:
- Grade 8 Distinction in Singing (Classical Opera) — performing classical opera repertoire in Italian and German.
- Grade 8 Distinction in Singing (Musical Theatre) — both female and male students have achieved Distinction under Ms Jin Loh’s tutelage.
