Perhaps the most misunderstood pedal of all three — even among pianists at Diploma level. Many pianists believe the Middle Pedal is primarily a Practice Pedal: a way to soften the piano’s volume so as not to disturb others while practising late at night. On many upright pianos, this is indeed one of its uses.
However, the Sostenuto Pedal on a grand piano serves an entirely different and far more sophisticated purpose: it sustains only those notes depressed at the very moment of engagement, while leaving all subsequent notes unaffected — an exquisite tool for isolating a bass note or an inner voice within a complex musical texture, without blurring the surrounding harmony.

She had never sat a single music exam before. Yet Ms Jin Loh looked beyond what the grades required — and saw what this extraordinary young student was truly capable of.
In 2011, an eleven-year-old Japanese girl named Miss Imamura arrived in Malaysia, having just relocated from Japan with her family. She began piano lessons with Ms Jin Loh — and from their very first session together, something remarkable became clear.
The two communicated across a significant language barrier; Miss Imamura and her mother spoke little English. Rather than let this diminish what was possible, Ms Jin Loh made a quiet but profound decision: she would learn Japanese. She studied formally under native Japanese speakers for approximately six years and sat several levels of the internationally recognised Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) — ensuring that her Japanese students and their families could always communicate with her directly, in their own language.
Recognising something truly exceptional in Miss Imamura’s playing, Ms Jin Loh proposed a path that would have seemed impossible to most: to bypass the graded examination pathway altogether and prepare directly for the Trinity College London ATCL Piano Diploma. Though Miss Imamura had learned piano in Japan and arrived with a genuine musical foundation, she had never once sat a piano examination in her life. Ms Jin Loh took approximately two years to train and prepare her for this extraordinary challenge.
The ATCL exam is no ordinary assessment. It is an intensive thirty-minute performance — a miniature solo concert — demanding sustained technical command and artistic focus for its entire duration. Miss Imamura prepared with extraordinary dedication, memorising every piece in its entirety, including long and complex piano sonatas spanning many pages. On the day of the exam, the scores were placed before her as a safety net — but she played entirely from memory.
Ms Jin Loh accompanied her into the exam room as her page turner — ready to translate should the examiner need to communicate something Miss Imamura could not follow. For twenty-five intense minutes, the thirteen-year-old played with complete concentration — until, without warning, her memory faltered mid-piece. She stopped. The room fell silent. The examiner looked up from the desk. Ms Jin Loh felt the stillness.
“Nobody spoke. Nobody intervened. Within a few extraordinary seconds, Miss Imamura composed herself — and continued, precisely from where she had stopped. Professionally. Completely.”
When the results were announced, Miss Imamura had scored 81 marks out of 100 for her ATCL Piano Diploma — a Distinction. Her very first piano examination, at diploma level. And this was a performance in which she had stopped. The pause was audible; the examiner saw it. One can only wonder what the score might have been had the playing been uninterrupted from start to finish — perhaps a High Distinction.
Ms Jin Loh still uses this story when students are struggling — when a memory slip feels catastrophic, or when the pressure of the exam room seems too great. The lesson is simple, and it applies far beyond music: forget the mistake. Refocus. Continue. The never-give-up spirit cultivated in the lesson room carries students not just through examinations, but through the whole of life.

Who Are These Lessons For?
Classical Piano — Diploma Level Students
Ms Jin Loh’s Classical Piano teaching is dedicated exclusively to diploma-level preparation — the ARSM (Associate of the Royal Schools of Music) and the LRSM (Licentiate of the Royal Schools of Music). She does not teach Classical Piano at Grade 8 or below.
This is a deliberate and considered choice. There are many talented piano teachers serving students across the Grade 1–8 pathway, and they do so with great skill. Ms Jin Loh instead devotes her teaching time and specialist expertise to where her knowledge is most distinctive — the most demanding summit of classical piano achievement, where the standard of preparation, musical understanding, and interpretive depth required is of an entirely different order.

That said, Ms Jin Loh offers an honest professional recommendation: Jazz Piano is most rewarding — and most appropriately suited — for students who have already completed Classical Piano at approximately Grade 8 level. In her experience, Jazz Piano is genuinely more demanding than Classical Piano. It requires a significantly greater volume of scale and technical practice, an entirely new harmonic vocabulary, and — most challengingly of all — the ability to improvise spontaneously with musical intelligence and style. Even students who have attained classical piano diploma level have been surprised by the rigour Jazz Piano demands when they first make the transition.
