Ms Jin Loh is a professionally trained classical and jazz musician. She plays six musical instruments: Singing, Piano, Cello, Flute, Guzheng (the Chinese zither), and Electone (the electric organ).

She is also among the rare music teachers who has formally studied Educational Psychology (UK) — the science of how students learn — alongside Sound Therapy (UK). Both certifications were completed with 100% Full Marks. In Sound Therapy, Ms Jin Loh was formerly a registered Sound Therapy Practitioner with The Complementary Medical Association (CMA), UK. Together, these complementary studies allow her to teach with a thoughtful understanding of how students learn, and of the quiet ways in which music supports wellbeing.

In addition, Ms Jin Loh is formally trained in Classical Ballet, having studied the discipline for approximately six years. She quietly draws upon this training in her teaching — particularly with her singing students — gently guiding them in how to move the hands, the arms, and the body, how to walk on stage, and how to carry themselves with the poise and grace of a ballerina. Complete beginners and ordinary people, with no Mozart-like musical gift, are warmly welcome — provided they are sincere, polite, kind, hardworking, disciplined, willing to listen, and willing to follow Ms Jin Loh’s instruction in order to improve. Most students who arrive with this spirit are accepted. Ms Jin Loh’s selection is rooted in personality and character, not in musical talent or academic results.

Not at all. Ms Jin Loh teaches all kinds of students — ordinary people, complete beginners, working adults, retirees, and young learners aged thirteen and above. It happens that a number of professionals, doctors, and lawyers have chosen to learn under her tutelage and have continued for many years, but the studio’s doors are open to anyone with a sincere wish to learn music.

Ms Jin Loh has been teaching since 1999 — close to twenty-seven years. Her studio has been devoted exclusively to online lessons since 2020 (the past seven years). Ms Jin Loh is not of Japanese heritage, yet the Japanese language holds a special place in her heart. Over some six years, she studied Japanese under several native Japanese teachers and sat for a number of internationally recognised Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) examinations.

She would gently describe herself as a lifelong student of the language rather than a fluent speaker.

Ms Jin Loh has a genuine fondness for many of the qualities she has come to know through her Japanese students and their families — their grace and gentleness, their discipline and diligence, and the sincere respect they extend to their teachers.

Yes. Ms Jin Loh is a professional jazz pianist as well as a classical pianist. She teaches ABRSM Jazz Piano Grades 1–8 and Professional Jazz Piano lessons covering jazz chord symbols, sheet music reading, and styles including Blues, Swing, Jazz Waltz, and Latin.

Ms Jin Loh teaches jazz piano, but does not teach jazz singing or jazz flute. Singing and flute are taught in the classical tradition. For singers, Ms Jin Loh also teaches Musical Theatre and Classical Opera repertoire alongside the ABRSM singing examination track.

Ms Jin Loh’s mentorship is designed for students aged thirteen and above, where concentration and the depth of vocal pedagogy and music theory can be absorbed meaningfully. Young children may not yet appreciate music knowledge of this depth, whereas adults often find the scientific and pedagogical understanding genuinely interesting, and find that it helps them learn more quickly.

Beyond the matter of depth, Ms Jin Loh’s earlier years of teaching young children left her with the impression that many children today are quite pampered, find it difficult to work hard, lack discipline, and at times are not as well-mannered as they could be. For these reasons, she has chosen not to teach young children — with the gentle exception of an exceptionally disciplined, hardworking, polite, and respectful child. Yes, very warmly. Many of Ms Jin Loh’s students are complete beginners — adults returning to music for the first time, working professionals, retirees, and students approaching music as a fresh discipline. Prior musical training is not required.

Ms Jin Loh does not offer trial lessons (free or paid). This is offered with care, not as a policy of exclusion. Trial lessons are a gracious custom among newer teachers — much as a newly-launched food product offers complimentary tastings — but one does not typically approach a Michelin-starred chef and ask for a complimentary tasting before dining at their restaurant. Ms Jin Loh’s forty-plus International Teacher Awards, her students’ consistent ABRSM and Trinity Distinctions, her role as an International Music Judge, and her recognition as a multi-award-winning Creative Artist featured in international interviews are offered as her testimony.

Yes, of course. You are warmly welcome to learn music for the simple pleasure of it, or to de-stress from your work. Many of Ms Jin Loh’s adult students learn for leisure and find great joy in it. There is no requirement to sit examinations or enter competitions.

It depends on the individual student. Some arrive with prior musical training (for example, having already completed Piano Grade 8 before learning a second instrument like cello or singing under Ms Jin Loh) — for such students with a strong foundation and music theory already studied, progress is naturally faster, perhaps around five years if they practise diligently. For complete beginners with no prior music training, the timeline varies and depends on practice habits, age, and the chosen instrument.

An analogy that may be helpful. The question is rather like someone walking up to a fitness coach and asking, “how long will it take for me to get six-pack abs?” — and the honest answer is, well, it depends on several things.

1. The starting condition. Is the person already reasonably fit, or quite far from it? Someone beginning from a less prepared state will naturally need longer than someone who already has a foundation. In music, this is the difference between a student arriving with no prior training, and a student who has already studied an instrument or sat early-grade examinations. The journey to Grade 8 will simply be a longer one for the absolute beginner — and that is perfectly fine, but worth understanding from the outset.

2. The effort beyond the lesson hour. Beyond the starting condition, the truer measure is how diligently the person works outside the training hour itself. Does the person continue the exercises the coach has taught, daily, for hours each week? In music, this is the same question: does the student practise daily, with focus and care, after the lesson has ended? A student who plays or sings only during the one hour of lesson with Ms Jin Loh, and does nothing in between, will progress at a very different pace from a student who practises faithfully each day.

3. The lifestyle around the goal. Even diligent training is undone by an unsupportive lifestyle. A person hoping for six-pack abs while eating fried food, soft drinks, and sweets every day — and exercising only during the one weekly hour with the coach — cannot reasonably expect quick results. In music, the parallel is a student who only plays or sings during the lesson hour, and treats music as something that lives only inside that single hour each week.

So the dedication, the time, and the effort one is willing to give for fast progress in fitness must be matched by the same dedication, time, and effort in music for fast progress to follow. The more a student gives, the more visibly the results emerge.

If a person who is far from fit, who exercises only one hour a week, who eats poorly, and who does not practise at home asks the fitness coach how long it will take to achieve six-pack abs — what answer could the coach honestly give? Ms Jin Loh answers her music students in the same honest spirit: each student’s progress to Grade 8 is shaped by their own foundation, their own daily practice, and the seriousness with which they approach the journey.

Outcomes depend on many things: the student’s commitment, practice consistency, age of starting, natural inclinations, and the gentle work of years rather than months. Many of Ms Jin Loh’s students have won First Prizes and Gold Prizes in international competitions — but this comes from sustained effort over time, not from a single lesson or even a single year. Her studio is fully equipped for professional online teaching: an Apple iMac 27″ computer (so Ms Jin Loh can clearly see her students playing or singing), iPad Pro 12.9″, iPhone, professional microphones, external webcams, Zoom Pro, and other teaching softwares. The 100% online format has proven highly effective — her online students consistently score Distinctions and Full Marks in ABRSM examinations and have won Platinum and Gold Prizes in international music competitions.

Jin Loh Professional Music is a 100% online studio, available worldwide. Lessons are conducted via Zoom Pro from a fully equipped professional teaching studio.

Ms Jin Loh uses Zoom Pro (her private licensed account) on an Apple iMac 27″ computer, with iPad Pro 12.9″, iPhone, professional microphones, external webcams, and other professional teaching softwares. Students need only a stable internet connection, a quality webcam, and a working microphone — a laptop or smartphone with the Zoom app is usually sufficient. Specific equipment guidance for your instrument will be discussed once you are accepted as a student.

All lessons are one-on-one (private). Ms Jin Loh does not offer group lessons or class-style instruction.

Since all lessons are online, students do need to have their instrument ready before lessons can begin. If you are unsure which instrument to learn and would prefer not to invest in one straight away, you may consider singing — your voice is your instrument, and it is already built into your body. No purchase needed to begin.

Lessons are typically conducted privately, one-on-one between Ms Jin Loh and her student. The exception is when Ms Jin Loh has accepted, under special circumstances, an exceptionally well-mannered young child (for example, a seven-year-old) as her student — in such cases the child’s mother is warmly welcomed to sit in alongside the child during lessons, both to ensure the child remains attentive and follows Ms Jin Loh’s instructions, and to gently assist as a learning companion at the side. For lesson fees, lesson timing, and other matters of arrangement, Ms Jin Loh prefers to discuss these personally with each student who is accepted under her tutelage. If your application is accepted, Ms Jin Loh will reply to you personally within three working days and inform you about your lesson fees.

Ms Jin Loh’s lesson fees are considered reasonable when placed alongside her qualifications, examination outcomes, and student achievements. Compared to teachers of equivalent calibre in the United States or the United Kingdom, her fees are approximately two to three times lower than the equivalent market rate in those countries.

One further consideration that quietly contributes to the reasonableness of her fees: unlike most music schools, Ms Jin Loh does not charge a registration fee or a facility fee for the use of her private Zoom Pro account. Lesson fees are billed monthly (not per semester), and there is no requirement to pay three months in advance, nor is a one-month deposit required — Ms Jin Loh trusts her students. Many of her students pay early, on the first day of the month or even the week before, simply because they value the lessons.

No. Unlike most music schools, Ms Jin Loh does not charge a “Registration Fee” when a new student first enrols under her tutelage.

Likewise, she does not charge a “Facility Fee” simply because her students benefit from her private, professionally licensed Zoom Pro account (rather than the free, basic Zoom account). Her professional teaching tools are quietly part of the studio’s offering, not a line item.

Students are asked only to settle their monthly lesson fee — nothing more.

No. Ms Jin Loh does not require a one-month deposit when a new student first enrols under her tutelage, and she does not charge a Registration Fee at the start.

In practice, Ms Jin Loh’s students often pay not only on time, but quietly early — some a week before the new month begins, others two months in advance. This kind gesture comes of their own accord, simply because they value Ms Jin Loh’s teaching and wish to ensure their weekly lesson slot remains gently reserved for them.

Ms Jin Loh expects her students to settle their monthly lesson fee punctually. Many of her students kindly pay on the first day of each new month; from the seventh day onward, payment is considered late.

Because Ms Jin Loh does not require a one-month deposit upon enrolment, charges no Registration Fee, and asks no Facility Fee — only the monthly lesson fee — punctuality of payment is the one quiet courtesy she expects in return.

It is also a matter of how Ms Jin Loh prefers to spend her hours. She is, at heart, a teacher — her time is given to thinking carefully about how each student may be guided as best as possible. Pursuing payment is not the work of a music teacher, and she would much rather not have to remind students to pay. Reminding feels uncomfortable for both parties — her students value the lessons, and they understand this without needing to be asked.

If a student forgets once or twice over a long span of otherwise punctual payment, that is, of course, perfectly understandable — life sometimes intervenes. However, should late payment occur two or three times within a short period, or should the overall track record of payment become consistently unpunctual, Ms Jin Loh will quietly release the weekly lesson slot and offer it to another student whose values align more naturally with the studio.

If a lesson is cancelled with at least 24 hours’ notice, a replacement lesson is arranged and may be carried over to the following months or year.

Lesson fees, however, are billed per month — not per individual lesson. Each month, Ms Jin Loh reserves your weekly time slot for you, so the monthly fee remains the same regardless of how many lessons you attended that month. (Per-month pricing is gentler than per-lesson pricing — most studios charge more on a per-lesson basis.)

Because Ms Jin Loh’s lesson fees are billed monthly (not by semester), if either teacher or student feels the lessons are no longer a good fit, the remaining fees are returned immediately — even if it is mid-month and there are still lessons left. There is no penalty.

As a quiet courtesy, should a student need to discontinue lessons, kindly aim to give Ms Jin Loh at least one month’s advance notice, so that she may thoughtfully arrange another student to take over the weekly lesson slot.

A replacement lesson will be arranged if you give Ms Jin Loh at least 24 hours’ notice before your lesson time. This is standard practice for music teachers (some teachers ask for 48 hours; Ms Jin Loh accepts 24 hours).

If a lesson is cancelled with less than 24 hours’ notice, no replacement is given — Ms Jin Loh cannot arrange another student to take that slot at short notice. However, in genuine emergency situations that could not have been foreseen, Ms Jin Loh will consider a replacement on a case-by-case basis.

Practice expectations vary by student level and goals. For exam or competition preparation, more focused daily practice is naturally needed. For leisure students, what matters is consistency rather than long hours. Ms Jin Loh discusses appropriate practice goals with each student during lessons.
