Music Theory is the language of music — the grammar and vocabulary that lies beneath every melody, harmony, and rhythm. When a musician understands music theory, something remarkable happens: their playing deepens, their sight-reading improves, and their ability to learn new pieces accelerates dramatically. Theory is not separate from performance — it is the very foundation of it.
Ms Jin Loh’s Music Theory lessons are renowned for being clear, engaging, and remarkably effective. for All Musicians
Every serious musician needs a solid grounding in music theory — not only for their own instrument, but so they can understand what other musicians are doing on theirs. Without a shared musical language, a pianist and a drummer sitting in the same room are effectively speaking English and German. How can musicians truly make music together if they cannot understand one another’s scores?
One foundation. Every instrument. Every voice.
Music Theory is the Grammar of Music
To speak any language well, one does not only learn how to pronounce the words — one must learn the grammar that holds them together. Good English requires more than words; it requires grammar. The same is true of music.
Playing an instrument or singing is like speaking a language. Music theory is the grammar that makes that language coherent, expressive, and meaningful. A student cannot truly master a language without knowing its grammar, and a musician cannot fully master music without knowing its theory.
A Theory Teacher Who Plays Six Musical Instruments
When the orchestration chapters appear from Grade 4 onwards, most theory teachers can only describe what the page says. Ms Jin Loh can explain it from the inside. For string writing, she does not simply point out the up-bow and down-bow symbols — she teaches when a string player chooses one over the other, and how the bow is physically executed, because she is an award-winning cello educator. When the syllabus reaches woodwind breathing, articulation, and the real difference between single and double tonguing, she teaches it from lived experience as a flute teacher — not from a textbook diagram. This depth of cross-instrument understanding is what transforms theory from a subject students memorise into a subject they truly understand.
“Music theory is the grammar of music. You cannot speak a language beautifully without its grammar — and you cannot make music meaningfully without theory. It is what turns notes into conversation.”

UK Classical & US Jazz Music Terminology
Ms Jin Loh is not only a professional classical musician — she is also a professional jazz musician. This dual fluency is rare among music theory teachers, and it is one of the quiet gifts she brings to every student. With an authentic foundation in both the UK classical and US jazz traditions, she understands both terminologies fluently, from the inside.
Even though her students take the ABRSM Music Theory examinations — which use British classical terminology — Ms Jin Loh always takes the additional care to also teach them the American jazz way of saying the same musical terms. This is so that, in the future, when her students wish to explore jazz, travel to the United States, or play alongside American musicians, they will already understand what their fellow musicians are speaking about.
A Few Examples
It is much like the English language itself. Both the British and the Americans speak English, yet they use very different everyday words. The British say flat; the Americans say apartment. The British say lorry; the Americans say truck. Both are correct — only the words change. Music is exactly the same.
Should a student learn only the British classical terminology in order to pass the ABRSM examination, they may later find themselves at a quiet loss the moment they sit down to play with American musicians, or wish to begin a journey into jazz. Ms Jin Loh ensures her students leave her lessons fluent in both worlds — ready to play, converse, and create music wherever in the world they may go.
